Our Aussie Story
I have been an Aussie owner since 1993, but an admirer for more than 30. I fell in love with the breed the first time I ever met one, well actually two. When I was a teenager one of my neighbors had two red merle females that were the smartest dogs I’d ever encountered. They would obey voice commands to do a variety of amazing tasks. What I still remember is how the owner could direct them by simply telling them, “Go run around the house and then sit in the car”. Off they went and did exactly that. They ran around the house in tandem and then dove into the car through the open window one after the other and they sat in the back seat. I’ve been in awe of the breed ever since.
Needless to say, in 1993 when I purchased my first Aussie, it was a red merle. He was beautiful and I was beside myself to finally own the breed I had admired for so long. He was named “Gander”. Unfortunately, I had let him out in the yard to go to the bathroom for a moment, unattended, and within 5 minutes my prize puppy was run over in the yard by an unexpected visiting relative. It was a terrible accident and a horrible way to learn that it only takes a moment for something unexpected and tragic to occur.
Several weeks later, I purchased the last remaining puppy from Gander’s litter. She was a sweet, little, red tri female who we named “Gemini”. She was a wonderful gentle dog who loved and watched over kids, geese, chickens, cats and goats. She was practically human and was a member of our family for 13 years. She lived with us at three different residences and loved all of our children and our first grandchild. However, her life was not without incident. She chased a rabbit across a busy highway and got hit by a car when she was seven. She was saved by our vet, but only because a family member saw what happened and transported her immediately. She lost teeth and was scarred up from the incident, but she remained the sweet loyal dog she had always been. My husband still says she listened better than the kids ever did.
In 1996, we purchased a Black bi male to be a companion for Gemini at the farm we lived on. He was a feisty pup who we named “Gator”. Gator needed more leadership and training than I was giving him at the time and he developed the bad habit of killing chickens. At that time, the kids were 8, 7, 5, 2, and I was pregnant with my daughter. My husband and I were both working full time and running a 10-acre farm with cows, pigs, goats, chickens, pigeons and of course the dogs and cats. When Gator was one, we found him a home with no chickens with an owner who was anxious to spend time working with him.
In the Spring of 2006, while Gemini was living out her last months as an elderly dog, we invested in our next Aussie. Our family took a road trip to north Texas to buy the cutest little fur ball with blue eyes you ever saw. “Spritz” is our blue eyed, blue merle Sire. To date he is the smartest, most awesome dog we have ever owned. He has a wonderful temperament combined with outrageous intelligence, awareness, and agility. Sometimes I think he can read my mind, and I know for sure he is aware of every move I make.
In the fall of 2006, following Gemini’s death, I decided to purchase another Aussie with the intention of breeding them someday. So, my daughter and I took a road trip over the Thanksgiving holidays to Missouri to pick up a Red Tri female who we named “Jade”. She is a fun-loving female, who runs like a deer and races the other dogs every chance she gets. She is a social being and always wants to be in the middle of the action.
During the 2007 Thanksgiving Holiday break, my husband and I took the kids camping up through Louisiana, Arkansas and Missouri for a week. I mapped out about 5 or 6 Aussie breeders who had puppies available at that time, so we could check out some black tri females to round out the Bayou Billiot’s Aussies. I was looking for a puppy; however, when we met the very personable one year old black tri named “Bristol”, she chose us.
Bristol and my son Adam ( 13 at the time) experienced love at first sight and there was no leaving without her. I had just finished housebreaking two puppies, so the thought of a one year old with some obedience and house training was quite wonderful. Anyway, Bristol was a great camping companion and there wasn’t a soul who met her that knew she was a new member of the family. She fell right into the family as if she had been there since birth. Sometimes it is best to let the dog pick its owner.
All of our dogs are unique. Each has its own personality and niche within the family pack. Our family consists of my husband Terry and I, Terry’s three grown children Justin, Heather, and Garrett, and our two children, Adam (16) and Sabine (13). The other animals in the family….three cats, one ferret, one hedgehog, one corn snake, one beagle, and one Boykin spaniel.
Although we now reside in Sulphur, Louisiana, my husband and his family are originally from Johnson Bayou, Louisiana. This is a coastal marsh town that’s as far south and west as you can be before you are either in the Gulf of Mexico or in Texas. We are the Billiot’s (pronounced B-O’s) from the Bayou, hence the name Bayou Billiot’s Australian Shepherds.
